Driving Experience

Powertrain & Performance

7.5/10

The 2025 Jaecoo J8 Ridge is powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine producing 183kW and 385Nm, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. Peak torque arrives from just 1,750rpm, giving the SUV strong mid-range acceleration for overtaking and highway driving.

An intelligent all-wheel drive system with torque vectoring is standard, alongside selectable drive modes including Snow, Mud, Sand and Off-Road. Ride quality is composed and the cabin remains impressively quiet at motorway speeds. Some reviewers have noted that the lane-keeping assistance and Traffic Jam Assist systems can occasionally feel overly sensitive.

Verdict: Strong turbocharged performance and a refined ride make the J8 enjoyable to drive, although some driver assistance systems could benefit from further refinement.

Fuel Efficiency

7/10

Jaecoo claims combined fuel consumption of 8.6L/100km, while independent Australian testing has generally returned figures closer to 10–11L/100km in suburban conditions. The J8 requires 95 RON premium unleaded, and its 65-litre fuel tank provides respectable touring range.

Unlike some competitors, the J8 is currently offered only with a petrol powertrain, with no hybrid option available.

Verdict: Competitive fuel consumption for a large all-wheel drive SUV, although hybrid alternatives remain more economical.

Interior & Everyday Comfort

Interior Comfort

9/10

The cabin is where the J8 Ridge makes its strongest impression. Dual 12.3-inch curved digital displays dominate the dashboard, while wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come standard alongside a premium 14-speaker Sony audio system.

The Ridge adds a suede headliner, configurable ambient lighting, heated and ventilated seats in both rows, a massage function for the driver's seat, a head-up display, integrated dashcam and powered tailgate. Cargo capacity is generous, offering 738 litres with the rear seats in place and expanding to 2,021 litres with them folded.

Verdict: One of the most luxurious and well-equipped cabins in its class, combining technology, comfort and practicality exceptionally well.

Exterior Design

8/10

The J8 Ridge has genuine large SUV proportions, measuring 4,820mm long, 1,930mm wide and riding on a 2,820mm wheelbase. Its upright stance, bold front grille and slim LED lighting create a premium appearance without becoming overly aggressive.

The Ridge rides on 20-inch alloy wheels and features privacy glass and premium exterior detailing that give it strong road presence.

Verdict: Modern, confident styling with proportions that suit the premium large SUV segment.

Safety & Driver Technology

Safety & Driver Assistance

7/10

Safety equipment includes:

  • Autonomous Emergency Braking with junction assist
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Blind spot monitoring
  • Rear cross-traffic alert
  • Surround-view camera
  • Driver attention monitoring
  • Automatic parking assist

At the time of writing, the Jaecoo J8 has not yet received an ANCAP safety rating in Australia. While the related J7 has achieved a five-star ANCAP result, that rating does not automatically apply to the J8. The J8 also does not currently have an officially published towing capacity for the Australian market.

Verdict: The technology offering is comprehensive, although buyers may prefer to wait for an ANCAP assessment.

Overall Value

9/10

The J8 Ridge delivers an extensive list of premium features that would traditionally be associated with more established luxury SUVs. Standard all-wheel drive, high-end interior appointments, advanced technology and generous equipment levels are complemented by an 8-year unlimited-kilometre warranty, 8 years of capped-price servicing, and 8 years of roadside assistance.

These ownership benefits help strengthen its appeal for buyers considering a newer automotive brand.

Verdict: Outstanding equipment levels and one of the strongest ownership packages available make the J8 Ridge an impressive value proposition.

Our Verdict

Overall Rating 7.9/10

Final Verdict: Should You Buy the 2025 Jaecoo J8 Ridge?

The 2025 Jaecoo J8 Ridge delivers an impressive combination of luxury, technology and refinement. Its spacious interior, generous standard equipment and comprehensive ownership program make it an appealing option for families wanting a premium SUV without sacrificing practicality.

There are still a few considerations. The lack of a hybrid powertrain, the absence of an ANCAP rating at the time of writing, and driver assistance systems that occasionally feel overactive may give some buyers pause.

Overall, however, the J8 Ridge presents a compelling alternative in the large SUV segment for buyers willing to look beyond traditional brands.
